While Web 2.0 is not some new version of the internet, it is the next generation of internet-based collaboration. Wikipedia, blogs, and social bookmarking are all examples of Web 2.0 services, which focus on creative expression, collaboration, and keeping up with a world that is constantly changing. While there are many reasons why a website owner should implement Web 2.0 strategies, the following are the top 5:
• More for Less – In this case, it is more content in less space. In the old website design, each article on the site required a separate page. If more than one topic was used on a page, the reader was easily confused. That meant lots of pages and lots of navigation links so each page could be found. New internet strategies eliminate the endless maze of pages and links. A blog, for example, contains several articles, or posts, on one page. Each post has its own heading, but only part of the post is displayed in order to conserve space, and includes a link so site visitors can continue reading if they’d like. • Clean, Clear, Crisp Design – Web 2.0 sites feature a design that is elegant in its simplicity. For example, visitors must be able to navigate if your site is going to serve its purpose, but it is not always easy to create navigation links and site maps that do the job. Because of the simplicity of Web 2.0 design, navigation is much easier for the user, making it more likely that they will see what you want them to see. • Ease of Use – The whole point of Web 2.0 is to encourage visitors to become users working together, rather than having each site act as an isolated portal. As a result, the sites are easy to use, allowing even a novice internet user to post comments or download files. Information is easier to find, and advertisements are placed so they are visible without interfering with the content. • Better Displays – Whether you are displaying data, mathematical equations, or a music video, Web 2.0 sites are perfect. The use of cascading style sheets and AJAX applications, along with plug-ins and add-ons, makes it easy for any user to create incredible displays on their site. Those same features make displays easy to use, or not use, for site visitors. • Search Engine Rankings – This is the aspect of Web 2.0 that makes the heavens open while the angels sing for many website owners. Without going into the technicalities of spiders and algorithms, which is pointless since they are constantly changing, it is safe to say that site content is a prime component of search engine rankings. The existence of keywords or phrases is not enough. They must appear often enough to gain attention, and they must be included in valid content. Because Web 2.0 content is constantly changing, being added to, and being improved upon, those sites tend to grab and hold the attention of search engines. Web 2.0 is based on eliminating static content, instead gravitating toward the ever-changing, dynamic content that is necessary to keep up with a changing world and the needs of site users. Implementing Web 2.0 strategies is a smart move for any webmaster, making it more likely that your site will be seen and that site visitors will hang around the site. After all, that is the whole point of having a website. __________________ |
